SPELT INSULIN RESISTANCE

Insulin resistance and health are an important topic of modern times, as an increasing number of people have difficulties with blood sugar regulation and metabolism. Insulin is a hormone that allows cells to use glucose as a source of energy, but when cells become less sensitive to its effects, the body must produce more and more insulin to maintain normal blood sugar levels.

Many symptoms of insulin resistance develop gradually and often go unrecognized. Tiredness after meals, increased cravings for sweets, weight gain and difficulty losing weight are just some of the signs that may indicate this problem. Therefore, it is important to recognize the changes in time and understand how insulin resistance affects the overall health of the body.

The link between insulin resistance and health is much broader than just blood sugar levels. This disorder can contribute to the development of type 2 diabetes, elevated blood fats, high blood pressure, and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Adopting healthy lifestyle habits, proper nutrition and regular physical activity are key steps in maintaining health and improving insulin sensitivity.

THE BENEFITS YOU CAN HAVE FROM SPELLA...

Spelled is an ancient type of cereal that belongs to the wheat family and has been used in human nutrition for thousands of years. Because of its rich nutritional composition, spelled has become a popular choice among people who want a higher quality and more natural diet. It contains complex carbohydrates, vegetable proteins, fiber, B group vitamins and minerals such as magnesium, iron and zinc.

Compared to modern types of wheat, spelled is less processed and is often considered a more nutritionally valuable alternative. Thanks to its fiber content, it can contribute to a longer feeling of satiety and a more stable energy level throughout the day. Flour, bread, pasta, flakes and many other products that can easily be included in the daily diet are made from spelled.

SPELL AND INSULIN RESISTANCE.. what is the most important...

When it comes to spelled and insulin resistance , the most important thing to understand is that spelled is not a food that cures insulin resistance, but it can be part of a balanced diet when consumed in appropriate amounts.

Spelled contains complex carbohydrates and dietary fiber that slow digestion and may contribute to a more gradual rise in blood sugar levels compared to some highly processed white flour products. This is why it is often chosen as a better quality alternative to refined grains.

However, it is important to remember that spelled still contains carbohydrates that affect blood glucose levels. People with insulin resistance should pay attention to portion sizes and combine spelled with protein, healthy fats and vegetables to make the meal more balanced.

Whole spelled products are usually the most beneficial, as they contain more fiber than products made from refined spelled flour. In addition to food choices, regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy body weight and a balanced diet remain key factors in controlling insulin resistance.

When preparing spelled, it is important to pay attention to several things in order to preserve its nutritional value and get the best taste:

  • Before cooking, rinse spelled well under running water.
  • It is recommended to soak the grains for several hours or overnight for a shorter cooking time.
  • Cook it at a moderate temperature so that the grains remain a pleasant texture.
  • Do not overcook it, as it may become too soft.
  • Use enough water during cooking.
  • Adding vegetables can enrich the nutritional value of a meal.
  • Combining with protein sources contributes to a more balanced meal.
  • Wholemeal spelled contains more fiber than refined spelled products.
  • When buying, check whether the product is 100% spelled.
  • Store it in a dry and cool place to maintain its quality and freshness.

Spelt drink

Ingredients:
2 tablespoons of spelled flakes
250 ml of water or unsweetened vegetable milk
1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
a pinch of vanilla (optional)

Preparation:
Place spelled flakes in a blender. Add water or vegetable milk, then cinnamon and vanilla. Blend for 1-2 minutes until you get a smooth drink. If you wish, you can strain or serve immediately.

This drink is light and easy to prepare, can be used as breakfast or snack, and cinnamon gives it a pleasant taste without added sugar.

GI INDEX - most important for insulin...

The glycemic index (GI) of spelled is important in insulin resistance because it shows how quickly a certain food raises blood sugar levels after consumption. Foods with a lower or medium GI lead to a more gradual rise in glucose, which means that the body does not have to secrete large amounts of insulin at once. In the case of insulin resistance, this is especially important, because the cells react less to insulin, so any sudden spike in sugar burdens the metabolism.

Compared to refined wheat products, spelled usually has a lower GI, especially in integral form, due to its higher fiber content and less processing. Fiber slows the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, which helps stabilize blood sugar levels. However, the GI of spelled is not the only factor – it is also important how it is prepared, in what quantity it is eaten and what it is combined with, because proteins, fats and vegetables further reduce the overall glycemic response of the meal.

SPELT GLYCEMIC INDEX

Combining spelled with other foods is important because spelled itself contains carbohydrates that can affect blood sugar levels, but the way we eat it can significantly change that effect. When spelled is eaten on its own, the body’s glycemic response can be faster, while in combination with proteins, healthy fats and fiber, that response slows down and stabilizes.

For example, when spelled is combined with vegetables, protein and healthy fats, the glycemic response of a meal can be reduced by up to approximately 30–40% compared to eating spelled alone. This means a smaller and slower rise in blood glucose, which is especially important in insulin resistance. Therefore, it is recommended that spelled be part of a meal, and not the only source of energy – for example with chicken, fish, eggs, olive oil or legumes, with a large portion of vegetables.

SPELTE PASTA...

Spelled pasta is a good choice because it is a nutritionally better alternative to classic white flour pasta. Spelled retains more natural nutrients, including fiber, B vitamins and minerals, which contribute to better nutrition and a longer feeling of satiety. Due to the higher fiber content, digestion is slower, resulting in a more gradual rise in blood sugar compared to refined pasta.

For people concerned about insulin resistance, spelled pasta may be a better choice because it has a more favorable glycemic response, especially if it is whole grain. However, it still contains carbohydrates, so it is important to take care of the portion and the method of preparation. When combined with vegetables, protein and healthy fats, it becomes a balanced meal that does not cause sudden spikes in blood sugar and contributes to a more stable energy level throughout the day.

INFORMACIJE O KNJIZI ..

Spelled pasta with vegetables and chicken

Ingredients:

  • 200 g spelt pasta
  • 150 g chicken fillet
  • 1 zucchini
  • 1 red pepper
  • 1 small onion
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • a little oregano or basil

Preparation:
Cook the spelled pasta in salted water according to the instructions (usually 6-10 minutes), then strain it. Don’t wash it off.

Heat olive oil in a pan, add finely chopped onion and fry briefly. Add the diced chicken and fry until golden. Then add the zucchini and pepper cut into strips or cubes and simmer for a few more minutes until the vegetables are soft.

At the end, add the cooked pasta, season with salt, pepper and herbs, then mix everything well and combine briefly on low heat.

This meal is balanced because it combines protein, fiber and healthy fats, which makes it suitable for more stable blood sugar levels.

THE IMPORTANCE OF NUTRITION IN INSULIN RESISTANCE...

Diet plays a key role in insulin resistance because it directly affects blood sugar levels and insulin secretion. When foods that quickly raise glucose are consumed, the body has to secrete larger amounts of insulin, which further worsens cell sensitivity over time. Conversely, a balanced diet helps to raise blood sugar gradually and more steadily, which relieves the metabolism.

By choosing the right food, it is possible to significantly improve the condition. A diet rich in fiber, vegetables, protein and healthy fats helps control appetite and reduces blood sugar spikes. It is especially important to avoid too many refined carbohydrates and sugar, because they most quickly lead to disturbances in the insulin response.

In the long term, nutrition is not only a support for therapy, but one of the most important factors in controlling insulin resistance. With proper nutrition, regular physical activity and a healthy lifestyle, it is possible to improve insulin sensitivity and reduce the risk of developing more serious metabolic diseases.

What not to do with insulin resistance

  • Do not skip meals, as this can lead to sudden spikes in hunger and overeating.
  • Do not consume large amounts of sugar and sweets, because they quickly raise the level of glucose in the blood.
  • Do not eat refined carbohydrates (white flour, pastries, industrial products) in large and frequent quantities.
  • Do not drink sweetened drinks and juices, because they have a high glycemic effect.
  • Do not eat “on the way” and in a hurry, because it is easier to lose control over the amount of food.
  • Do not make meals consisting only of carbohydrates (eg only pasta, bread or pastries without proteins and vegetables).
  • Do not make meals on your own in such a way that only carbohydrates are combined without a balance of proteins and fats.
  • Do not rely on processed foods as the basis of your diet.
  • Don’t ignore portions – even healthy foods in large quantities can affect blood sugar.
  • Do not avoid physical activity, because movement helps improve insulin sensitivity.
